WHAT THIS GUIDE COVERS
  1. Packaging must solve more than shelf appeal
  2. Separate identity from technical artwork
  3. Request print and production handover

Packaging must solve more than shelf appeal

An export pack needs to communicate the brand while fitting the product, shipping conditions and rules of its intended market. A visual direction approved for Vietnam should not automatically be treated as ready for every overseas destination. Begin with product category, target countries, consumer or distributor channel and pack format.

Supply the actual dieline, dimensions, materials, print method, product photography, existing identity and any mandatory information. Confirm which client-side specialist is responsible for regulatory review. A designer can arrange approved information; compliance decisions require qualified review.

Separate identity from technical artwork

Commission the brand visual direction, key hierarchy and packaging system before finalizing dozens of SKU artworks. Then define the number of product variants, language versions, barcodes, symbols and print-ready files.

A product family may benefit from common visual architecture while preserving clear differentiation among flavors, weights or formulations. Ask for mockups of the full range, not only a single hero SKU.

Request print and production handover

Agree on color standards, label materials, finish references, printer proofing, tolerances and who signs off pre-production artwork. Decide whether the agency is responsible for coordinating vendors or only delivering production files.

Confirm font licenses, illustrations and usage rights. An export buyer may later ask for a white-label adaptation, so identify which editable source assets should be retained and how modifications will be managed.

Build the quotation from verified inputs

The brief should state market, product category, number of SKUs, deliverables, materials and client-supplied legal text. Flag any missing specifications before approving a quote.

Packaging is a partnership across marketing, product, sales, compliance and manufacturing. A clean review sequence prevents artwork from becoming the place where unresolved business decisions are discovered too late.

Coordinate the people who approve packaging

An export packaging project usually touches brand management, product development, regulatory review, print production and export sales. Assign a specific approver for each area rather than asking the designer to resolve contradictory feedback. Give the agency one master file of approved factual text, including product names, weights and market-specific statements.

Build a version table for SKUs, language editions, sizes and print methods. Mark which variants share a common design system and which require separate artwork. This prevents the final bill from becoming a surprise when a single visual concept expands into dozens of production files.

Request printer proofs and documented sign-off before full production. Treat regulatory review as the client's qualified responsibility unless a separate expert engagement expressly covers it. In cross-border trade, a reliable workflow matters as much as the aesthetic result.
