Build a reporting framework that distinguishes visibility signals from commercial outcomes and attribution limits.
Three questions need three measures
A useful GEO report answers three different questions: was the business visible, did someone visit, and did that interaction contribute to an opportunity? Do not collapse these into one success number. Microsoft’s AI Performance reporting describes citation activity within supported experiences; that is not the same thing as a universal view of every AI assistant.
Record the reporting source and its coverage next to each metric. If a platform reports citations, label them citations. If analytics reports referred visits, label them visits. Commercial outcomes should come from an agreed lead qualification process, with duplicate and spam submissions excluded.
Design a repeatable observation panel
For manual checks, define a fixed set of buyer questions across discovery, comparison and purchase preparation. Record the exact prompt, date, language, location settings and whether search was used. Repeat observations rather than treating one favourable screenshot as proof of lasting coverage.
This panel is a diagnostic sample, not a market-share estimate. Results can vary with context and system changes. Keep its size and limitations visible. An answer mentioning the brand incorrectly should trigger a factual review, not be counted as an unqualified win because the name appeared.
Connect reporting with decisions
Compare periods with a change log: which pages were edited, which campaigns ran and whether tracking changed. Ask sales whether new enquiries match the target market and service. A self-reported discovery question can supplement analytics, but it remains imperfect evidence rather than precise attribution.
End each review with a decision: repair a page, answer a missing buyer question, improve conversion or continue observing. Knock Knock recommends a small dashboard with documented definitions over an impressive-looking score nobody can audit. Measurement should help the team allocate effort, not manufacture certainty about an opaque channel.
